From 13 years.
In 1941, Joseph is a small ten year old Parisian who lives happily among the hair salon that holds his father, his six brothers and sisters, friends and school. But the Germans occupied Paris and gradually impose restrictions on Jews, wearing the yellow star. Joseph's parents, who fled the pogroms of Russia, fear the worst for their children. So they give money to Joseph and Maurice explaining that they must go to the free zone. Themselves must settle some business before leaving Paris. The two brothers leave and then after a long journey, they crossed the line and then join their older brothers, Henry and Albert, already installed in Menton ...
In A bag of marbles Joseph Joffo us his story, without exactly telling us the truth. However, this is his true memories. However, all is not told, which would obviously be too heavy. Moreover, what makes the book interesting is that Joffo is objective. At no point does it condemns the Nazis, nor the French working together, although this time of fear and flight is very difficult for a child of ten years.
Camille.
