"Land of Cities: A remarkable collection of history and geography of some large cities

Collection CD-Roms "Land of Cities" published by Belin (Director of Collection: Jean-François Coulais) in the early 2000s, was a remarkable collection, produced in partnership with the BNF IAURIF IGN and Spot Image and with the participation of the National Center of Cinematography and the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industry. Unfortunately this collection disappeared after 5 titles: "Paris and Ile de France" , "San Francisco" , "Rome 2700 years of history" , "Hong Kong" , "Naples Vesuvius and Pompeii" .
Among these titles, one dedicated to "Paris and the Ile-de-France" I have, is of very high quality so not its design and multimedia development (society Hyptique ) by the ongoing educational interests that prevailed in the choice of iconography, writing comments and especially the mapping and prospects (in all senses of the word) the history and geography the city and its suburbs.

This CD-Rom is a doubled book written by Jean-François Coulais Gentelle Pierre, François and Pierre Pinon Dugény.
To help educational uses of these products, Belin published a "Curriculum Guide" inviting various educational uses of the collection of titles from the 6th to the terminal. This guide includes 32 photocopiable activity sheets (downloadable for free from Belin ... but I have not found) with the educational objectives in the introduction, the course work to do in the classroom or at home, the type of material to be exploited.
The CD-ROM on "Paris and Ile de France" has four main chapters which is added an index to provide additional information:
- Landscapes
- The Land and Men
- Reconstructions
- Form Urban

On the first form, the user interface, very easy to use, is based on a sleek black background and a strip of temporal sequence of chapters on content which, at any time, you can pause. If necessary, it is possible by clicking on the slide, or go directly to return on a particular point or stage in the relevant chapter.
Each of these chapters deals with the history of the city and urban forms, some of which are still visible and others have disappeared. The reconstructions in 2D or 3D location of historic sites in the city of Lutetia and development of the medieval town and finally the contemporary city of Paris and the Paris region are particularly clear and telling.

Similarly, the linking between map illustrations, 3D reconstructions, comments, and iconography old is quite relevant.

analysis and demonstrations of urban development is at different scales in images and maps in a way that could draw many books and websites.

Finally the 3D reconstruction of buildings and entire neighborhoods can support the demonstration of the evolution of urban forms is observed not only across the city but also that of buildings, streets, neighborhoods.

Even if I do not know the other titles in this series, I imagine they are the same level of quality and educational value than that "Paris and the Ile de France" . If so, it is therefore the entire collection is to put all hands of those who want to understand the history and geography of the few major cities that make up this remarkable collection.
only regret that the collection was not pursued.
