Geo-tour guides handheld digital atlases

the approach of summer vacation, it's time to think about how geography and digital mapping can (maybe) help us in our plans for sightseeing. Of course there are the inevitable support systems, GPS navigation, specific equipment or in-vehicle applications on mobile phones, which help to find and stay on course for some / or certain not to lose face for others.
But there are also tour guides digital pocket that can be purchased or, in most cases, rent on some sights and work on equipment such as personal digital assistants (PDAs), sometimes on some multimedia mobile phones (smartphones) equipped with a GPS chip or connected to a GPS unit.
So, I recently discovered Baladio Guide . Small handheld GPS link, full information about sites visited, it can be rented in some tourist sites and offices such as the Home Park Valley of Chevreuse .

Several routes are proposed, their layout and your exact position being reported on a base map IGN 1 / 25 000.
The rental fee is 5 € day and it only takes a security deposit or an ID to be able to rent the unit. In addition, you can report the Baladio Guide to an end point different from the place of original loan.
So I discovered this device (you can rent here for 2 € / hour) at the House Elsa Triolet-Aragon Moulin de Villeneuve Saint-Arnoult en Yvelines.
There are other handheld digital tour guides, such as the Ecoguide proposed by Mercantour National Park, you can rent in different parts of Park and offers many walks in space Park. The rental rate is the same as for Baladio Guide , 5 € day.

Various routes and places to visit and accommodation are offered on base maps specific (and not IGN) which can also be found on the Internet on Google Maps .

Among other guides, I selected the following:
Digi-Guide offering tourist itineraries guided by GPS and audio-video and commented on some European cities. The rental price is 15 € / day and 25 € for 2 days (demo seen here ).

GPTo , which wants an audio / visioguide GPS multimedia fun and maintainable, which works on PDA or Smartphone. The routes can be user-modified version GPTo station (list of references and demo here visible here).

Some equipment manufacturers also provide embedded GPS solutions that create self its own routes and transfer them in its GPS equipment before using it for his ballads tourist tailor. " Garmin is the case and its TourGuide ® which, using the free POI Loader software, create your own POIs and routes on your computer before transferring them to its equipment Garmin. The Garmin website lists several websites companies prposent routes already established in different countries or parts of the world. Note that Garmin also offers a version of Garmin Mobile for Blackberry that finds these same opportunities for self-created routes on what kind of smartphone.

Cityzeum offers a free download (after registering on the site) or guides to choose from many destinations and attractions available around the world. It can download audio guides format. mp3 or guides with pictures and videos on multimedia mobile phones, Pocket PC (Windows Mobile) on Tom Tom GPS, iPod (text), BlackBerry & iPhone (multimedia version). The guides are available for download on his computer and transferring its mobile multimedia terminal or directly from it. The site and contents are collaborative which means that they are enriched by the "Internet-tourists" themselves.

The site of Jean-Michel Billaut features an interview and demo Cityzeum by Julien Laz founder Citzeum.

A site article GeoInWeb of 2007 had already reported Cityzeum among many other sites devoted to digital Geotourism online or shipped. Finally Camineo
society offers the device Cyclopedia we can discover in detail here which allows among others to connect to servers to enhance the multimedia information already available and we can all georeferenced discovered automatically based on GPS position. Cyclopedia was developed in 2006 and 2007 as part of an Interreg driven by the Val de Loire and whose project management was provided by the Departmental Committee of Tourism of Anjou, which today offers Cyclopedia for cyclists taking the route along the Loire Cycling.
"Pedal with pleasure on the route between the Loire Cycling and Montjean Gennes-sur-Loire: let us guide you to sites selected for their heritage or culture. Triggers, such as fitness, visual or audio commentary correspondent. Recognize the song of a bird emblematic of the Loire Anjou, listen to the commentary a wildlife photographer, observing a typical plant of sandbanks, interpret the landscape ... while identifying with a GPS. " This is the principle and the program offered by this device for cycling enthusiasts and the valley Loire.
